Checking IRS Refund Status is Easier

Last updated on April 4, 2013

The IRS says it issues a refund 21 days after submission of a tax filing, but there can be delays due to additional reviews. Taxpayers should review the status of their refund to determine when to expect the funds to reach them. Now, checking the status of your refund has become easier with the IRS’ online inquiry platform ‘Where My Refund?’ and its mobile application IRS2Go. Due to overwhelming inquires about refunds; the IRS created a convenient way for taxpayers to check their refund status online and on their smartphones.

‘Where’s My Refund?’ is available at the IRS website. Taxpayers can check their refund status, including the when the IRS received the return, when it was approved, and the expected disbursement date. The tool does not provide an exact date, but an estimated time.

The IRS2Go mobile application was designed by the IRS to allow taxpayers to check their refund status, get tax information updates, and watch IRS videos on their smartphones.

Most taxpayers receive their refunds in less than 21 days. Therefore, it is suggested taht taxpayers check their refund status only after the refund does not reach them within the 21-day time period. ‘Where’s My Refund?’ is updated every 24 hours, so taxpayers may check their status daily.

The ‘Where’s My Refund?’ tool was redesigned for 2013, and now displays the process in three individual stages to help taxpayers quickly get the information they need.
