Tax Filing Tips for 2013
Last updated on January 28, 2014
When you file your tax return this filing season, you must make sure that you are filing accurately. Even if a tax preparer is preparing your return, you should still check your return for inaccuracies before it is filed.
If you have hired a professional to prepare your taxes, be sure to sign the return only after your preparer has completed it. Never sign a blank return and allow your tax preparer to prepare it and file it. You must be the last person to check the return before it is filed.
It is particularly important to double check your calculations before filing. Many times, the IRS returns a tax return for amendment if the return has major miscalculations. If the miscalculation leads to an understatement of income, the IRS might audit.
Remember to check the Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), your filing status, your name, and whether you have signed the return or not. If these are not completed, the IRS will not be able to process the return.
Avoid the last minute rush. Make sure you have enough time to prepare and file the return. If you do not use electronic filing of the tax return, your return must be in the mail to the IRS before the April 15th deadline.
